The Square School was founded in 1969 by qualified Montessori teachers in a garden square, hence the name. In 1975, the school then moved to Holland Park Avenue. We cater for 18 children and have the use of three rooms and a garden in a large private home. This setting enables us to nurture the homely atmosphere so important to small children going to school for the first time. The school age range is from eighteen months to five years. We have a maximum of 18 children per session.
Children's progress
Progress of each child is carefully assessed, and we welcome discussion of your child’s development with you, at a mutually convenient time. We feel strongly that each child relate to his/her own work, and that the child’s progress should not be compared to the achievements of other children.
The Next School
Since a child’s experience at The Square School will establish the foundation for his/her future education, considerable interest is taken to ensure that he or she moves on to the most suitable school for that child. Our Head Teacher has been to the majority of the schools where the children move onto, and is happy to discuss future schools with any parents.
Our Staff.
We have a team of 4 fully qualified teachers on board. Our aim is to provide an environment where children feel they are important, special and valued members of their own little community. Our teachers are gentle and nurturing, assisting in your child’s developmental growth through positive and gentle guidance. Each child is encouraged to strive for his personal best and emphasis is placed on effort and trying one’s best at everything we do. Our days are packed with fun, stimulating and creative activities. The Square School's goal is to create a positive atmosphere that emphasises self-esteem, selfcontrol and friendship. Praising positive behaviour and ignoring behaviour we wish to discourage is part of our discipline approach. Positive directions are used to tell the children what they should do, instead of focusing on what not to do, i.e “walk please” instead of “no running”. Redirecting the child to another activity and keeping the child’s goals or interests in mind are other techniques used. Words are the tools we use to teach and encourage problem solving skills between children. This helps them to make careful judgements, choose appropriate solutions, and to understand the consequences of different choices.
